The idea of writing a book is exciting and gets your blood pumping but when it comes time to put pen to paper, we can stare at a blank sheet for hours. I want to give you some tips on how to get started on writing your book.
1. Write regardless.
Even when nothing comes to mind, start writing. Write about your day, the person who inspired you the most, the person who pissed you off when they cut you off in traffic and almost made you spill your coffee. Just write. Sometimes when you begin writing about one thing, an idea for another comes. So just start.
As an author I enjoy good books. They even sometimes give me ideas to write. Read a book and see what ideas spark.
3. Chapter Brain Storming
For non-fiction writers, chapter brain storming is a good idea to get the juices flowing. Write down as many possible chapter titles. It doesn’t matter if you use the title or not. Once you come up with a chapter title, see if you can go into detail about the chapter. Write as much as you can without worrying about editing.
4. Thankful and Inspiration List
Sit down, relax and think about all the things you are thankful for or things that inspire you. Why are you thankful? What about ____ that inspires you. Use these things to remind you how more thankful and inspired you will be once you finish writing your book.
These are just some simple tips to help you get the juice flowing. Some other tips to help keep you consistent, is to try to write in a place with no distractions and preferably some place that inspires you. Try to keep a daily word count goal. For example, every day Monday through Friday your goal is to write 2,500 words. If its not words, the try to write a chapter a day.
The most important thing to remember is to just get started and finish. Don’t worry about misspelling words or not having everything grammatically correct. You can worry about that later.
